Meet The Artists: Gill And Scott
We have such a colourful and vibrant program of buskers and performers that decorate Centre:MK.
We thought that this week, you'd like to meet some of our awesome artists and hear about their performance experience.
Gill Beckett - Guitar
Gill was born in Dartford, Kent and has been playing since she was 11yrs old. She took the guitar as a lesson in secondary school after watching her dad play in his bedroom. She taught herself the basics for a few years then enrolled in evening classes to craft her art.
At 16, she went to a folk club in Gravesend and was asked to join a band that went nowhere. After having three kids, Gill moved to Leighton Buzzard and built up her song repertoire, mainly of 60s covers and folk songs. She busked in the town centre, then got regular Sunday afternoon spots in two of the local pubs. That lasted a year and she moved once more, this time to Blakelands in Milton Keynes.
She didn't play for nearly ten years, then after meeting her current husband Nige, he encouraged her back to the local music scene via open mic nights in Newport Pagnell. Eight years down the line and she has been on local internet Radio (RadioMK and CRMK), organised a few open mics in the town and is the organiser of the Royal British Legion's Legion of Rhythm. She also plays in a jam night group called Def Wednesdays. Gill's Music tastes are varied from the 40s to the present day and she lists her dad as one of her greatest musical influences.
Scott Brown - Guitar
Scott got into music at an early age as his brothers both played but was initially scared to do anything about it. When he was around 12-13, he knew he could sing and always wanted to learn how to play the drums, but unfortunately, life took over and those ambitions were dropped in favour of career and family.
When Scott was 37 he took the chance and bought a drum kit from a family member, not realising that it would open so many doors for him. Now music has completely changed his life and he now sings and plays the guitar; he loves it. Scott says, "follow your dreams, embrace the music and just go out and perform!"
"Would you like to know more?"
